Yeovil Archaeological and Local History Society

2018-19 Programme

Are you interested in history and archaeology? Particularly of Yeovil and its surrounding towns & villages?

YALHS talks start at 7:30 pm (prompt), on the 1st Friday of the month, Oct – May.

We also organise regular visits to archaeological digs and historical sites during the summer months.

2nd March (Fri) ‘Walter Bagehot – Langport’s Unknown Celebrity’ – Speaker – Barry Winetrobe

6th April (Fri) ‘LIDAR – The Imaging of a Hidden Landscape’ –  Lidar is commonly used to make high-resolution maps, with applications in geodesy, geomatics, archaeology, geography, geology, geomorphology, seismology, forestry, atmospheric physics, laser guidance, airborne laser swath mapping (ALSM), and laser altimetry. The technology is also used in control and navigation for some autonomous cars.

4th May (Fri) AGM followed by a talk – ‘Brewing in Weymouth’ – Speaker – David Riches – Director at Weymouth Museum Trust and Collection Manager at Weymouth Museum. – (Non-members – free entrance!) – bring a friend

12th June (Tue) Guided tour of Weymouth Museum, Brewers Quay, DT4 8TR. (£2.50 per person) – The tour will start at 10.30am with tea and coffee laid on by Pauline when we arrive. The tour should take about one and a half hours. (the maximum number is 16 or 20 at a push – a reserve list will be started if required). Parking at the moment is expensive anywhere in Weymouth, but Pauline advised that there is a cheaper Council carpark at West Way near the Quay, however she did say that this may be redeveloped, and therefore unavailable in the future. Leaflets with suggestions for what to do in the afternoon will be available alongside the booking sheet.

6th July (Fri) – start at 6.30pm South Petherton walkabout led by Liz Randall (Details later)

August Nothing arranged, intention to take in an archaeological site (if available) or a site of archaeological interest (if not) – place your name on the sheet if you want to come along once something has been arranged.

7th September (Fri) The Somerset Rural Life Museum, BA6 8DB – entrance is £4.95 each – – meet up at 2pm (There is a Café at the Museum also Glastonbury Town is a 10 minutes walk away)

2nd November (Fri) Talk on ‘World War I – about the local lads who went to war and the ladies role in the war’ – Speaker – Darren Berry

5th December 2018(Fri) ‘The Unfortunate Captain Pearce & the Wreck of the Holswell’ (about a huge East India Company ship wrecked on the Purbeck coast) in 1786) by the author – Phillip Brown

4th January 2019 (Fri) Members’ Evening – With various talks, a quiz and light refreshments

1st February (Fri) – Roman History of Ilchester – Speaker – John Smith

1st March (Fri) ‘Walter Bagehot – Langport’s Unknown Celebrity’ Speaker – Barry Winetrobe (talk brought forward from last year)

5th April (Fri) ‘The Lost Islands of Somerset’ (about the Levels) – Speaker – Richard Brunning (talk to be confirmed)

3rd May (Fri) AGM followed by a talk – Parish Boundaries in and around Yeovil – Speaker Jim Hart – (Non-members – free entrance!) – bring a friend


Talks are held at Holy Trinity Church and Community Centre, Lysander Rd, Yeovil, BA20 2BU (Non-members Welcome – £2 at the door)

Membership:
